Lien Smeesters from B-PHOT Brussels Photonics Team, Vrije Universiteit Brussels is Moderator of the ACTPHAST session at the Smart Farming Conference 2021.
Lien Smeesters is a post-doctoral researcher within the B-PHOT Brussels Photonics Team at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). She focuses on multidisciplinary and applied-oriented research in the field of optical spectroscopy and optical design.
This includes the development of spectroscopic sensing techniques, and their optical integration into industrial applications, including the development of advanced imaging systems and laser-scanning configurations. She is involved in a large number of industrial projects, also within the framework of the European Funded ACTPHAST 4.0 and ACTPHAST 4R program, for which she acts as expert, scout and project leader.
Lien is driven by pursuing photonics innovation within Europe, by integration of novel technologies as freeform optics or advanced spectroscopic sensing, benefiting society. She thinks that freeform optics, application of machine learning and VR are the emerging technologies with greatest potential in the short and long run.
B-PHOT Brussels Photonics is a research group within the Faculty of Engineering at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Our continuous mission is to advance photonics, the key digital technology that uses the unique properties of light to innovate. As such we contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. We are recognized by the Flemish Government as “Photonics Spearhead for Industrial Research and Innovation” because of our track record for transferring photonics expertise and innovation breakthroughs to companies. B-PHOT is also uniquely involved as coordinator of the EC-funded pan-European initiative ACTPHAST that supports both SMEs and researchers with photonics innovation.
