The use of oak barrels for wine ageing is a widespread technique due to the ideal physical and structural properties of oak wood. The oak barrel is an active, interactive container that releases aromatic compounds and tannin when wet while allowing oxygen to penetrate and largely determines the characteristics of produced wine. Optimum Sorting develops and manufactures optical sorting machines for the food processing industry, mainly focusing on the sorting of potato products, candy, vegetables, nuts and dried fruits. Optimum’s sorting machines detect foreign materials in real time at high capacity, using the principles of light reflection, scattering and fluorescence. Maria Konstantaki Aging in oak barrels, gives wine its unique mouthfeel and bouquet character due to the release of tannins and aromatic compounds. The limited availability of oak in conjunction with the demanding barrel fabrication process increases the cost of oak barrels.
Furthermore, oak barrels have a limited lifespan of use and after a number of repeated usage in wine aging they must be replaced. Currently the assessment of the condition of an oak barrel is empirical and thus subjective. Indy Magnus: In this presentation, we will explain how a ‘Water-Quality Early Alert System’, enabling the remote, continuous and real-time monitoring of water using RGB cameras is being developed. Generally, the idea is to correlate the RGB camera images to a variety of physicochemical parameters and biological parameters without direct contact or the need of water samples. By doing a spectroscopic study of water with different parameters, using both a spectroradiometer and hyperspectral camera, the RGB camera outlook (filters, lenses) can be optimized.
